Baseball Scoring

Class 2A: EAST 7, West 2

The East broke open a close game in the opener of the day by scoring four late runs to win 7-2.

Crossing the plate twice each for the East were Drew Overman of Alexandria and Levi Allen of Northfield , while Briendle Fletcher of Centerville , Brian Thomas of South Ripley, and Brandon Hainlen of Eastern (Greentown) scored one apiece. Zach Sailors of Wabash recorded three RBI for the East, and Jacob Stewart of Centerville had a RBI.

For the West, Sam Maxwell and Justin Marchino, both of South Knox, scored one run each, and J.P. Hobbs of North Knox drove in both of those runs.

Class 3A: WEST 3, East 2

This game was a pitchers’ duel through four innings, as neither team could plate a run.

The East almost got on the board in the top of the fifth inning. Jonathan Bowles of Crawford County received a one-out walk, but was thrown out at the plate after a two-out single by Andrew Tople of New Palestine.

The West scored in the bottom of the fifth to take a 1-0 lead. Jay Hachmeister of Boonville walked to open the inning, and Matt Cunningham of North Montgomery drove him in from third base with a one-out single.

The East tied the score in the top of the sixth inning. Justin Sturgeon from Silver Creek reached on a two-base error and scored on a two-out single by Patrick Kolks of Franklin County .

It didn’t take long for the West to retake the lead, scoring two runs without the benefit of a hit in the bottom of the sixth. Alex Zobrist of Lebanon was hit by a pitch to open the inning and Joey Clifton from North Montgomery followed with a walk. Both scored on wild pitches to make it a 3-1 lead for the West.

The East got within a run in the top of the seventh inning. Trey Thurston from Madison was hit by a pitch to open the inning and later scored on a groundout by Whitko’s Trevor Sleighter to cut the lead to 3-2. But the East couldn’t score again.

Class 4A: WEST 8, East 3

The West put the East behind the 8-ball early by scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Ryan Black from Harrison led off the first with a single, and one out later Ben Kennedy of Franklin Central, Andrew Cope from Harrison, and Nick Perry of Mooresville all added singles. Those were followed by walks to Zach Corpe and Ryan Teeter, both from Elkhart Memorial, which was followed by a two-run single from Dylan Allen of Harrison . Black, Kennedy, Cope, Perry, Corpe, and Teeter all scored in the inning for a 6-0 West advantage.

The score stayed that way until the bottom of the fourth. Black led off with a double, and Dain Burress from Castle followed with a towering homerun over the right centerfield fence to increase the West’s lead to 8-0.

The East avoided a shutout in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Colin Brooke and Ben Taylor, both from Fishers, hit back-to-back doubles and Brooke scored. With two outs, Cody Nickle of North Montgomery blasted a two-run homer over the left field fence to draw the East to within 8-3. That was the final run of the game.

Class 1A: WEST 14, East 2

The powerful West team featured seven players who participated in the previous week’s state championship game (five from state champ Lafayette Central Catholic and two from runner-up Tecumseh), plus the state’s top homerun hitter this past season.

Kolton Chapman of Tecumseh got a one-out single in the bottom of the first and Frank Fisk from Frontier drove him home with a two-out single, giving the West a 1-0 lead.

The East took a brief 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning. Mikey Kelly from Bethany Christian led off the inning with a walk, and Jordan Caldwell of Southern Wells followed with a single. Kelly scored on a wild pitch and Caldwell crossed the plate on single by Matt Bohman of Oldenburg Academy.

That lead didn’t last long, as the West retook the lead in its half of the third. Austin Ault from Caston and Nate Benge of Bethesda Christian received back-to-back walks to open the inning. Four straight singles by Scott Windler of Lafayette Central Catholic, Chapman, Taylor Glaze from Lafayette Central Catholic, and Fisk followed. Ault, Benge, and Chapman all scored in the inning for a 4-2 West lead.

The West took a 6-2 lead in its half of the fourth inning. With one out, Reed Drysdale of Lafayette Central Catholic walked and Cole Hruskovich from Lafayette Central Catholic reached base on an error. Drysdale scored on a double by Austin Kiser of Pioneer and Hruskovich crossed the plate on a groundout by Chas Bobillo of Lafayette Central Catholic.

Showing its power, the West put the game out of reach with eight runs in the bottom of the sixth. Glaze, Fisk, Ault (pinch running for Trevor Noffsinger of Tecumseh), Chanse Baldwin of Caston, Drysdale, Hruskovich, Kiser, and Ryan Beckley of Tri-County all scored in the inning and Bobillo added another RBI.

Joey Copp of Tri-Central doubled with one out in the top of the seventh inning to keep the East’s faint hopes alive, but he was left standing at third base.
