SCORING SUMMARIES FOR POSTYOURT BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL GAMES

Below are the scoring summaries for the all-star games held on Saturday June 25.

BASEBALL

Class 4A: East 5, West 2

The East took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a home run from Jamey Hightower of Richmond. The West tied it in the bottom of the fourth after Lawrence North’s Cory Meixner opened with a double and scored on an error.

The East regained the lead in the top of the fifth. Patrick Morrow of Richmond and Jake Kendall of New Castle received back-to-back walks and moved up on a passed ball. Conner King of New Castle grounded out to drive in Morrow and Kendall scored on another passed ball give the East a 3-1 advantage.

The West pulled to within 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth. Meixner led off with a double, moved to third on an infield hit by Gabe Acevedo of Portage, and scored on a fielder’s choice grounder off the bat of Lake Central’s Brandon Cloutier.

The East added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Kendall got a one-out infield hit and King followed with another hit. Trevor Yates of East Noble then drove in Kendall and King with a double to make the score 5-2.

The West was retired 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh. Adam Jones of Columbus North was the winning pitcher for the East.

Class 3A: West 8, East

The West used the long ball to score one-half of its runs in its victory over the East. But before the balls started flying over the fence, the West plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Tyler Simmons of Kankakee Valley singled to center field and Dalton Bechtel of North Montgomery reached base on an error. Connor Love of Western drove in Simmons with a groundout, and Nick Thurston of Danville drove in Bechtel with a single.

The East came back and tied the game 2-2 in the top of the third inning. Daniel Soffera of Indianapolis Bishop Chatard and Clayton Baker of Scottsburg reached base, and with two outs Dylan Janes of North Harrison droved them in with a double.

Six runs crossed the plate for the West in the bottom of the third. Chase Peters of Plymouth reached base as did Andrew Adelsperger of Peru. Lucas Jeffries of Danville drove in Peters to beak the tie, and then Josh Smith of North Montgomery unleashed a three-run homer to give the West a 6-2 lead.

Austin Rodriguez of Danville then followed with a solo shot to bump the advantage to 7-2, and Simmons scored the sixth run of the inning for an 8-2 West lead.

The East got one of those runs back in the top of the sixth inning. Will Busse of Bellmont reached base on a passed ball after a called third strike. Walks to Todd Fowler of Delta and Ethan Anderson of Scottsburg filled the bases, and then Daniel Soffera was hit by a pitch, driving in Busse to make it 8-3, which was the final score.

Fred Ebner of Hammond Gavit was the winning pitcher for the West.

Class 2A: East 6, West 4

The East scored all six of its runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 6-0 advantage, and held on from there.

Jordan Ashbrook of Union County reached base after a wild pitch on a strikeout. Josh Parr of Centerville was hit by a pitch, and both moved up on a wild pitch. Tyler Kelley of Hagerstown walked to fill the bases, and Clayton Kramer of Eastern Hancock was hit by another pitch to drive in Ashbrook with the first run of the game.

Braxton Siddons of Churubusco then stepped to the plate and slapped a single to left field, plating both Parr and Kelley. Steve Stunda of Eastern Hancock ripped a single to center field scoring Kramer to give the East a 4-0 lead, and Siddons moved to third.

With two outs, Hunter Brown of Eastern Hancock reached base on a wild pitch after a strikeout and Siddons scored. With Taylor LeFever of South Adams at the plate, Stunda crossed the plate before Kramer was caught in a run-down, and the East led 6-0.

Konner Eck of South Knox scored for the West in the top of the fourth after getting on base with an infield hit, and Nick Bollenbacher of state runner-up Hanover Central brought the West within 6-2 in the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run over the right center field fence.

The West pulled to within 6-4 in the top of the sixth. Blake Knowling of North Putnam opened the inning with a walk, and two outs later Eck blasted a home run over the left field fence, plating Knowling and himself. But that was as close as the West could get.

Taylor Smith of South Adams was the starting and winning pitcher for the East.

Class 1A: West 8, East 3  

The West scored first in the top of the second inning. Bryant Ackerman of Loogootee was hit by a pitch to open the inning and scored on a two-out single by Mason Roberts of Rossville, giving the West a 1-0 lead.

The West added five more runs on just two hits in the top of the fifth inning. Spencer Gommel of Oldenburg Academy walked to open the inning, Roberts had an infield single, and Taylor Goff of Indianapolis Lutheran was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Jim Moorman of Oldenburg Academy then received a base-on-balls to drive in Gommel. Levi Marshall of Bethesda Christian then reached base on an error as Roberts and Goff scored. William Salon of Fort Wayne Canterbury later followed with a two-run single to left field, enabling Moorman and Marshall to cross the plate for a 6-0 West lead.

The West added two runs in the top of the seventh to make the score 8-0. Roberts opened with an infield hit and Goff followed with a walk. Moorman singled to left, scoring Roberts and Marshall followed with an infield hit to plate Goff.

The East avoided a shutout in its last at-bat in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Cameron Hensley of Trinity Lutheran homered over the left field fence for the East’s first run. Blake Welch of Randolph Southern followed with an infield single, Blue River Valley’s Drew Teague walked, and with two outs Kody Sauser of Randolph Southern drove both of them in with a double to the left center field fence, making the final score 8-3.

Charlie Nichols of Rossville was the winning pitcher for the West.

SOFTBALL

Class 1A/2A: West 6, East 1(Game 1) East 7, West 4 (Game 2)

For the West in game 1, Hali Murray of Linton-Stockton had a home run and Chelsey Nuhring of Tecumseh was 3-3 at the plate. West runs were scored by Murray (2), Nuhring (2), Hanna Daunhauer of Evansville Mater Dei, and Alex Farmer of Evansville Mater Dei

For the East in game 1, highlights were an RBI double by Kourtney Mayhill of Lewis Cass, and doubles by Katelind Phillips of Monroe Central and Taylor Mercer of Eastern Hancock.

For the winning East team in game 2, Chelsey Heath of Frontier was the winning pitcher in going the distance. Rohni Beck of Central Noble had two hits, Savannah Gaumer of Frontier and Allie Gillenwater of Providence had key hits, and Knightstown’s Hannah Smith scored one of the runs.

Carrie Voegel and Kelsey Reker, both of Evansville Mater Dei, had two hits for the West in game 2. Runs were scored by Voegel (2), Kara Werner of Clinton Prairie, and Megan Redman of North Posey.

Class 3A/4A: West 5, East 0 (Game 1) West 4, East 3 (Game 2)

For the West in game 1, Alayna Super of Mitchell played an outstanding left field, and Marissa Sullivan of Plymouth had a double.

The second game was much more dramatic. The East took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the final inning. Kristen White of Bloomington South, Carissa Embry of Henryville, and Bailey McIntire of Logansport scored the runs to give the East that lead. Chelsea Purcell of Westfield had a key double.

But the West rallied. Alayna Super of Michell and Alyssa Conrad of Northview reached base. With one out, Meghan Bunch of LaPorte drove both in with a double. With two outs, Jordan Batliner of Floyd Central doubled, driving in Bunch to tie the score 3-3. Jaden Spitznagle of Harrison then sent all West fans home happy with a single to drive in Batliner for the 4-3 come-from-behind win.
