The seventh annual POSTYOURT East/West High School All Star Basketball Games held on Saturday April 23, 2001 at Noblesville High School were a success. All eight games were competitive, and the four boys’ games were fast-paced and high-scoring affairs. Players, parents, and fans appeared to enjoy the event.

The following are some comments after the final game from Class 1A East Boys co-coach Brian Klein of Blue River Valley (who has coached for two consecutive years in these games) and two of his players, Jared Lawrence and Aaron Knupp, both also from Blue River Valley.

Brian Klein: “It’s a real challenge to give everyone equal playing time, which is the purpose of an all-star game. We probably didn’t always have the best lineup out there at times, but that’s okay. The kids enjoyed it and I enjoyed it. Just looking around in the other classes, there’s a lot of talent here that we competed well against this season. This is a great event for all of the right reasons. I’m honored to be a part of it and it’s an honor to all the kids here for the good seasons and careers they had.”

Jared Lawrence: “I had a great time. It might have been the final time I play in an organized basketball game like this, so I just wanted to go out, play hard, and enjoy myself, which I did. It was fast-paced, but I run distance in track and we didn’t play the full game, so I’m not tired.”

Aaron Knupp: “We started passing really well, which is kind of unusual in an all-star game. We also got to play on a team where everybody has a lot of talent, and got to play with players we faced during the season. Another thing I liked is that it was an up-tempo game, which all of us like. It was an honor to be here tonight.”

But the West scored the final 11 points of the game for the final 10-point victory margin.

Nobody scored in double figures for the well-balance West, as Ashley Lutz from Class 4A state runner-up Penn led it in scoring with 8 points. Johnson led the East with 12 points, and also led those in attendance in the Pledge of Allegiance before the game.

This game was remarkable for two reasons. First, it was the first time in the seven-year history of this event that a game went into overtime. Secondly, the East had to dig out of a gigantic first half hole to claim victory.

The West built a huge 36-12 lead with about five minutes left in the first half, but the East started chopping away at the deficit and went on an 11-2 run late in the half to close to within 38-23 at intermission.

The East climbed all the way back in the second half to tie the game 49-49 at the end of regulation. Brierra Young of Class 2A state champion Fort Wayne Bishop Luers scored all four of the points in the overtime to give the East the win. Young led the East with 14 points, while Samantha Beatty of South Spencer paced the well-balanced West squad with 7 points.

CLASS 1A GIRLS GAME: West 72, East 50

The West jumped out to an early 13-4 advantage and maintained that cushion in the first half, taking a 35-26 lead at intermission. The West gradually expanded that lead in the second half to 71-40 before settling for the 22-point victory.

Jordan Finke of Indianapolis Lutheran scored 23 points to lead the West, and teammates Kelly Walter of Tri-Central tallied 13 points and Shelbi Westerhouse of Morgan Township added 10 points.  Three girls scored 8 points apiece to lead the East: Kayley Baughman of Elkhart Christian, Ciarra Rench of Cowan, and Hana Roberts of Shawe Memorial.

Lydia Morrow of Randolph Southern defeated Kelly Walter of Tri-Central in the three-point shooting contest at halftime 4-2.
