The POSTYOURT All-Star soccer games were held on Saturday November 5, 2011 at Park Tudor High School. This was the fourth time the boys games were held, and the third time for the girls games. Attendance was very good, crowds were enthusiastic, and players competed hard. The weather was chilly, although the sun was present for almost all of the day. Light winds blew from the south and later, the east.
Recaps for all four games are below in the order in which they were played.
Girls Game: WEST 4, East 3
The first game of the day was a good one. Shayla Bauchle of Indy Southside Thunder Home School opened the scoring with a goal for the West at the 32:33 mark of the first half. The East tied the score about seven minutes later on a goal by Erica Munoz of Hammond High.
Indianapolis Park Tudor’s Rachel Smitherman gave the East a 2-1 lead on a goal with 5:10 left in the first half, but the West’s Alanna Fennimore of Decatur Central scored a goal with 1:18 remaining in the opening half, and the teams were deadlocked 2-2 at intermission.
The West’s Jeslyn Zimmerly from Westview High School had a good shot at the 30:40 mark of the second half, but it sailed just over the goal and the score remained tied.
Just about three minutes later, Fennimore scored her second goal of the game to give the West a 3-2 advantage with 27:49 left.
Zimmerly narrowly missed again on an attempt with 26 minutes remaining, but finally came through with a goal at the 17:41 mark to give the West a 4-2 lead.
With 12:36 remaining in the game, Sarah Cho of Culver Academies scored the East’s only goal of the second half, which cut the West lead to 4-3.
Both squads tried hard to score in the remaining minutes, but neither could get a ball to tickle the back of the net, so the West emerged with the victory in a well-contested game.
Class 3A/4A Boys Game: WEST 5, East 0
Both teams were aggressive in attacking each other’s goals in the first 12 minutes, but neither could push a ball into the net.
That changed at the 27:47 mark of the first half when Hiaron Sosa of Hammond Clark scored a goal to give the West a 1-0 lead.
About eight minutes later, Brendon Widau of Avon slammed in a goal from about 20 yards away to give the West a 2-0 lead.
Dominique Harris from Indianapolis Pike almost scored the East’s first goal with 12 minutes left in the first half, but his attempt was just wide of the goal.
With just 1:53 remaining in the opening half, Daniel Curiel of Hammond Clark scored on about a 15-yard shot from in front of the goal to give the West a 3-0 advantage, which was the score at halftime.
Over 13 minutes of the second half passed without another score, but that changed at the 26:41 mark of the period when Levi Lotz of Twin Lakes High School powered a ball into the net for a 4-0 West lead.
Just over 10 minutes later, another Hammond Clark player, Eduardo Navarro, scored a goal to give the West a 5-0 advantage.
The East tried valiantly in the final minutes to avert a shutout, but was unable to score, as the West walked off the field with the victory.
Class 1A/2A Boys Game: 2A Boys 2, 1A Boys 0
Both squads were well-represented with players, as the 1A team had 20 participants and the 2A team 19. The teams were aggressive from the get-go, and both mounted attacks against the other’s goal.
Despite that, neither team could get rid of its goose egg on the scoreboard in the first half. 1A goalkeeper Lincoln Smith of South Knox and 2A goalkeeper Austin Weyer of Forest Park turned away every shot that threatened to cross the plane of the goal.
It seemed like déjà-vu in the second half, as both teams mounted attack after attack, but none resulted in a score.
Finally, with 13:04 remaining in the game, Josh Brenneman of Bremen High School had a good look and fired in a goal to give the 2A team a 1-0 lead.
It appeared that might be the only score of the game, but with 3:50 left, Wheeler’s Gavin Voss kicked in a goal from about 12 yards out to boost the 2A lead to 2-0.
That’s the way it ended, as Weyer and Wapahani’s Ethan Jacobs combined for a shutout in goal for the 2A team.
Private/Home School Boys Game: RED TEAM 4, Blue Team 3
This game, literally, went right down to the wire. Both teams displayed their speed and aggressiveness throughout the contest.
It didn’t take the Blue team long to score, as Darric Obinger of Calumet Christian High School scored a goal at the 35:51 mark of the first half to give his team a 1-0 lead.
A little over six minutes later, Isaac Knutson of Indy Southside Thunder Home School added another goal for the Blue team at the 29:24 mark, giving it a 2-0 advantage.
The Red team bounced right back. Austin Myers of Genesis United pushed a ball into the net at the 24:55 mark of the first half to cut the deficit to 2-1.
About ten minutes later, Matt Hoff of Colonial Christian High School propelled in a goal for the Red team to tie the score 2-2. Both teams had chances in the final 15 minutes of the opening half, but couldn’t capitalize on them, so the score remained deadlocked at intermission.
It didn’t take long for the knot to be broken in the second half, as Obinger scored his second goal of the game at the 35:58 mark to restore a 3-2 lead to the Blue team.
The action was fast and furious the next 16 minutes, but the score did not change.
Finally, with 19:56 left in the game, Myers scored his second goal of the game for the Red team to tie the score 15-15.
Neither team appeared to be content with a tie, so the attacks on each other’s goals resumed. For a long time, it did appear that the game would end deadlocked.
But with a mere 17 seconds remaining in the contest, Joel Kelly of Colonial Christian blasted a ball into the net from about 10 yards away to give the Red team a 4-3 lead.
Not enough time was left for the Blue to counterattack, so the Red players and fans celebrated the well-earned victory on the field.
